James Woodruff, MSS, LSW
James Woodruff (he/him/his) is a Licensed Social Worker in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biological & Evolutionary Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University and his Master of Social Service from Bryn Mawr College’s Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. He strives to maintain a warm, compassionate, and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+-identifying individuals, delivers trauma-informed care, and utilizes the strengths of lived experience to maintain an equitable therapeutic relationship.
James has a wide range of experience in the field of mental health, working in several different treatment settings, levels of care, and areas of focus before coming to Artemis. These experiences included residential treatment, hospital-based care settings, and other outpatient programs as well as some settings that focused on assisting with developmental disabilities and others that provided support for substance use concerns. James developed a solid foundation for his knowledge and practice as a therapist from these experiences that he pulls from in order to better come alongside and help those he works with in therapy.
James collaborates with individuals between their mid-teens and late adulthood who may benefit from help managing challenges associated with depression, post-traumatic stress (PTSD) and complex trauma, and neuro-developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. James embodies an eclectic approach to therapy, allowing him to select relevant aspects of different interventions and compiling them into one deliverable intervention that is tailored to the individual rather than their diagnosis. Examples of the interventions James uses include Mindfulness techniques; Internal Family Systems (IFS); Motivational Interviewing (MI); Solution-Focused Therapy; Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT); and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), among others.
James specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders and obsessive/compulsive-related disorders. James has extensive training in exposure-based interventions for these concerns including Exposure Response Prevention (ExRP) for OCD and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) for PTSD. James is also trained in delivering the Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (S.P.A.C.E.) protocol, an approach designed to address symptoms of childhood anxious and obsessive disorders by working exclusively with parents to reduce parental accommodation and regain control of their lives.
“You are the expert in your own life and entering into therapy is a deliberative way of making the most of the abilities you already have. I am here to walk the path with you with an eye always on how best to use your present circumstances to inform your future endeavors.”
